Flower Care

Preparation
Remove all stem leaves that will sit below the vase water line. Whilst submerged in water, cut the flower stems diagonally with scissors to enable the flowers to absorb cut flower food at the same time as eliminating bacteria that clogs flower stems (stem cutting is recommended every few days). This will also prevent air bubbles forming - if this occurs water can be blocked and therefore does not draw up into the flowers. A diagonal cut also provides a wider surface from which flowers can drink.

Food
Ensure your vase is clean and and add cut flower food to warm water. This food will increase the life of your flowers by up to several days (cut flower food can be purchased wherever flowers are sold).

Display
Place your vase in a cool, draft-free location, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Do not place on top of your television set.

Maintenance
Top up the water every day and replace totally after a few days. Spray-mist the flowers too if you are able. Transfer to a smaller vase when you get down to the last few flowers.

Tips
1) Avoid steel or iron containers.
2) Ensure the vase is leak-proof and has enough room for your flowers and water to fit comfortably.
3) For some flower arrangements you may want to utilise a brick of floral foam to hold flowers in place (soak the foam in water containing floral food solution - allow the foam to soak up the water at its own rate - cut to fit the shape of your container, leave room for water - foam cuts easier when wet).
4) The height of your vase should be about one third a a half as tall as your vase - this will maximise the chances of your flowers remaining in a upright position (you can always create a grid on top of your vase with clear tape to aid placement of your flowers)
5) Flowers too short for your favourite vase? Simply add pebbles or marbles to the bottom of the vase.
6) Use a kitchen bulb style baster for watering to avoid spills.

Take a look at our hints for care of individual types of flowers

Alstromeria

Ensure you remove all foliage before placing in a vase as the leaves will wilt before the flowers. Will last approximately two weeks in water. Take good care of alstromeria as the stem joints can be easily broken.

Carnations
Very easy to care for and can last for at up to three weeks. Should be kept away from ripening fruit and vegetables because of the ethylene gas that is emitted which can affect the flowers.

Celosia
Will last up to a fortnight. Remove leaves as they are not particularly pretty and do not last very long.

Chrysanthemums
A long lasting flower, again can last up to three weeks without a problem. Ensure you remove any damaged buds to ensure freshness remains within the rest of the flower.

Cymbidium Orchid
Can last up to several weeks. Partial to cool air and misting. Should be kept away from ripening fruit and vegetables because of the ethylene gas that is emitted which can affect the flowers. Make sure you cut off old flower heads

Freesia

Keep well watered and never let the ends of the stems dry out. Remove old flowerheads to encourage new ones to open. Should be kept away from ripening fruit and vegetables because of the ethylene gas that is emitted which can affect the flowers. Will last in the region of a week to ten days.

Gerbera
Requires warmth and bright light. Can be planted outside if temperatures are over 5 degrees. Likes warm water.

Iris

Select flowers in bud with colour showing. Keep in a cool location - they will last longer.

Lilies

Pinch the pollen stamens and pull them out of the flower. This will prolong the life of the flower and well as removing the risk of staining. Ensure you use sellotape to remove pollen, not water as this will only make the stain worse and more diicult to remove. The potential to last up to three weeks.

Lisianthus

Cut the stems regularly and these flowers will last a long time.

Protea

Leaves are prone to going black so may be sold without leaves.

Roses

If your roses are looking lifeless - stand them up to their necks in lukewarm water in a cool room. Do not bash the stems and this prevents proper water intake. Should last approximately a week.

Strelitzia

Buy when the first flower bud is fully open. Strelitzia ooze sap which can make the flower quite sticky although it can be wiped away (take care with this!). Pull away any wilted material to encourage growth.

Sunflowers

Ensure you cut stems and place in cool water. Change water every couple of days.

Tulips

Tulips will continue to grow after you receive them and they are placed in water. Remember this when placing them in your vase (or wrap the stems tightly in newspaper and stand them in water underneath a light for a several hours. Tulips will most likely last just over a week.
