Five handy tips to keep home flowers fresh19 March 2021When you receive a beautiful bouquet of flowers, you can be forgiven for wanting them to last as long as possible. Whether it’s filled with roses, freesias or tulips, having an arrangement of flowers can brighten up your living space and fill the air with natural perfume. While the usual lifespan of a bouquet of fresh flowers is between five to seven days, depending on your florist, we’ve compiled some quick tips you can try which may allow your home displays to last a little longer. Get misty Use a spray pump to mist your flowers at home. Remember, if they were still planted outside, rain showers would fall on all parts from roots to petals, providing sufficient moisture. A regular misting will have a similar impact and ensure the petal heads have plenty to drink. Give them a little fizz Adding fizzy drinks can revitalise your flowers as the sugary carbohydrates contained within can feed their stems. About a quarter of a can will be enough, and if you’re using a clear vase, remember to use an equally clear soft drink like lemonade so that your water doesn’t discolour and ruin your arrangement. Fewer bacteria, more food Before placing your blooms in a vase, always makes sure you thoroughly clean it first with warm soapy water to remove any build-up of bacteria to protect them from harm. When refreshing the water, never be afraid to add some more plant food while you’re at it. Knife beats scissors Chopping the stems of your flowers each day will help extend the life of your blooms, but a knife can be better than scissors which can crush rather than cut stems sometimes. Reducing the length of your stems daily will enable water and nutrients to arrive far faster to your petal heads keeping them in better condition. Size matters A large bouquet of flowers will need a vase to match or its stems can become cramped and the petals will start to wilt. Offering your flowers lots of room will ensure they have enough breathing space and will make them last for longer.
